Home Security Basic Tips

A Nexus Home Security 24 wireless security system is one of the most important things you can do to keep your home and loved ones safe. There are additional benefits such as monitoring your home when you are away, checking on the babysitter, children and pets, seeing who is knocking on the front door, etc.

Listed below are Top 10 Home Safety tips

  1. Do not open the door until you know who it is.   If it is a stranger, you may be opening the door to trouble. Once the person is in your home, it can be that much more difficult for you to get help. Even opening the door a little might be trouble.  Even if you’re using a security chain, many of those can be cut in just an instant.
  2. Have your Nexus Home Security remote keychain in your hand.  If something does happen and you get into trouble, all you have to do is press the panic button to immediately notify the Monitoring Center.
  3. Your front door should have a peephole. This will make it easier for you to know who’s at your door when there’s a knock.
  4. Reinforce your door. Replace your door’s strike plates with heavy-gauge plates that have long screws.  These plates make it a lot more difficult for an intruder to kick in your door or pry it down.
  5. Keep your front door entrance well-lighted.   You will be able to look out and clearly see who’s standing there.
  6. Ask for identification.   See if there’s a vehicle with a corporate logo out front. Next, ask the person for an ID badge, and have them put it through the mail slot. If in doubt call the company and double-check their identity.
  7. Never just ignore a knock. It’s generally better to respond than to say nothing. Burglars are interested in robbing your possessions, not confront the homeowner.  If you are quiet and don´t respond, the burglar may conclude there’s no one home and decide to target you. Just call out, “It’s not a good time,” and that can be enough to keep the person moving on.
  8. Don’t let your guard down during the day.. Statistics show that most home invasions occur during daylight hours. It’s good to always stay vigilant, no matter what time it is.
  9. Let your dog bark and growl.  Burglars are interested in an easy profit and not in a loud, nasty confrontation with your dog, no matter you pet´s size.
  10. Use your home security signs.  Post your Nexus Home Security sign in a prominent place in the front of your home and display stickers near your front door entry can be an  effective deterrent. These signs are an indicator that targeting your home may be more trouble than it’s worth
